Sunshine Superman Tickseed

Everything star tickseed offers, compressed into a tidy 10-inch mound that fits a container as naturally as a meadow edge.

'Sunshine Superman' is a compact cultivar of the native star tickseed, selected for its smaller stature and more prolific flowering rather than for any radical departure from the species. Where the straight species spreads to 4 feet and can use hard cutting back to stay contained, this cultivar holds itself to 10 to 12 inches tall and 6 to 8 inches wide without intervention — a meaningful difference in a small garden or pot.

The flowers are the same bright yellow notched daisies as the parent, surrounding a darker disc center, and they appear consistently through summer. Full sun and dry to medium well-drained soil keep it performing well; it tolerates rocky and sandy ground readily, along with drought, heat, and humidity. Deadheading is still worthwhile to extend the bloom season. Though it is a vegetative clone, it will sometimes self-seed true when well-established. Deer ignore it.
