Little Ruby

Cornus Little Ruby™ 'NCCH1'

Flower
Little Ruby

A small-yard dogwood bred by NC State that earns its space in every season — pink spring bracts, maroon fall foliage, and a form that never outgrows its welcome.

Little Ruby was developed as a deliberate collaboration between NC State University, the NC Nursery & Landscape Association, and supporting institutions — a genuinely local plant with international parentage. Its mother, Cornus kousa 'Miss Satomi', contributes the pink flower bracts and cold hardiness; its father, the evergreen C. hongkongensis 'Summer Passion', passes along the semi-evergreen foliage and a subtle tropical elegance. The result is a tree that behaves well in tight spaces, reaching 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide over time.

The seasonal progression is what makes it worth attention. In late spring, pink bracts open from single to semi-double, ranging from soft blush to deeper rose depending on growing conditions. Through summer the foliage is glossy and dark. Come fall, it shifts to deep maroon and holds that color through the first hard frosts, persisting until temperatures drop below 15°F. Disease resistance is notably better than older dogwood cultivars, and it tolerates both full sun and partial shade in average, well-drained garden soil. For a small garden needing a multi-season anchor, it is a strong choice.
