Variegated Jade Plant
Crassula ovata 'Variegata'
The green-and-white variegated leaves of this jade cultivar have a clean, graphic quality that holds up even when the plant sits still for years at a time.
Variegated Jade inherits all the constitution of the species but adds a second layer of interest: the thick, egg-shaped leaves carry streaks and margins of creamy white against their green ground, a contrast that is sharper in bright light and softens slightly in lower-light conditions. Like the species, it originates in South Africa's Eastern Cape and carries the same preference for lean, well-drained soil in a bright indoor position. The small root system means it is comfortable in a modest pot for many years — which suits it, since frequent repotting into oversized containers encourages root problems over growth.
Humidity is the one condition it tolerates poorly. In steamy kitchens or bathrooms, overwatering becomes an even greater risk. A cool-to-average room with good airflow and a south- or west-facing window describes its ideal situation. The plant rarely blooms indoors, but at one to four feet tall with a well-developed branching structure, the foliage is the point. Propagation by leaf or stem cutting is straightforward. Worth noting: jade plants are toxic to cats and dogs.
