Dwarf Japanese Cedar
Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans Nana'
Slow-growing, dense, and compact, this dwarf cultivar brings the elegance of the Japanese Cedar to smaller gardens without the scale — and turns a quiet bronze each winter.
Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans Nana' is a slow-growing, rounded conifer that earns its place in smaller gardens where the species tree would dominate. It builds up to a dense, flat-topped mound of four to seven feet in time, with finely textured, feathery foliage that is soft blue-green when juvenile. As the leaves mature they become stiffer and more prickly, a transformation that adds textural complexity to the plant across seasons. In winter the foliage turns bronze, returning to green in spring — an annual color shift that gives this otherwise static evergreen a sense of seasonal movement.
Full sun is preferred, with light afternoon shade in the hottest climates, and protection from strong drying winter winds will keep the foliage from scorching. Acidic, fertile, well-drained soil is ideal, though this cultivar tolerates compacted urban soils if irrigation is provided. Little pruning is needed to maintain its natural form, which makes it a low-maintenance specimen for a prominent position. Autumn sometimes brings small, inconspicuous cones that create no nuisance. It is worth noting that Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans' — despite the similar name — is a much taller, pyramidal tree and not a dwarf form.
