Yuki Cherry Blossom™ Deutzia

A compact deutzia bred in North Carolina that earns its keep twice over: soft pink spring blooms, then bronze-purple autumn foliage from a plant barely knee-high.

Yuki Cherry Blossom deutzia came out of the breeding program at North Carolina State University, developed by Thomas Green Ranney as a cross between Deutzia gracilis 'Nikko Blush' and Deutzia x rosea 'Carminea'. The result is a tidy, rounded shrub reaching just 1 to 2 feet tall, bringing the exuberance of the genus into spaces where the larger species would overwhelm. It is a member of the hydrangea family and performs best in zones 5 through 8, tolerating most soils with ease once established.

Flowers appear from May into June on short panicles: each bloom a five-petaled star in soft pink with white margins on the outside and a light violet wash within, a color combination that calls to mind Japanese cherry blossoms at their most painterly. After the flowers fade, the dark green leaves carry the plant through summer, then shift to a warm bronze-purple as temperatures drop — an unusual attribute among deutzias. This is a low-maintenance plant well suited to containers, patio borders, or front-of-border placements where its twice-yearly display can be appreciated close up.
