'Acapulco Orange' Giant Hyssop

Tubular orange flowers on fine, airy stems from late spring through first frost — a compact hummingbird magnet that earns its keep at the front of a sunny, well-drained border.

Acapulco Orange is a hybrid giant hyssop that brings warmth to the pollinator garden with its spikes of tubular tangerine-orange flowers, which open from late spring and continue without interruption until hard frost. Growing 1 to 2 feet tall and nearly as wide, it has the light, open structure typical of the hyssops — fine-textured foliage and upright flower stems that move in the slightest breeze — but in a color that reads as genuinely vivid without being harsh. The minty fragrance of the leaves is a bonus.

Like all agastache, this cultivar demands well-drained soil; sandy, low-fertility ground in full sun is ideal. Wet winter conditions are its primary weakness, making containers and raised beds worth considering in heavier soils. Plant near the border front where the hummingbirds and bumblebees working the flowers can be watched at close range. Zones 5 to 10. Deer resistant. Keep an eye out for spider mites in hot, dry spells.
