Anise Hyssop

A humidity-tolerant hybrid hyssop that bridges the gap between anise and mint: lavender-blue spikes from summer through fall, fragrant foliage, and an easy temperament that suits the southeastern garden well.

Blue Fortune is a hybrid between Agastache foeniculum and A. rugosa, two species with different regional characters — one a North American prairie native, one Asian — and the cross inherits useful qualities from both. It grows 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide in full sun to part shade, producing showy lavender-blue flower spikes from summer through fall that attract pollinators continuously. Crush the foliage and the scent is distinctly minty with a licorice undertone. Among southeastern gardeners, Blue Fortune has earned a reputation as the hyssop that actually tolerates summer humidity.

Well-drained soil is essential — clay and wet winter feet lead reliably to crown rot. On slopes, in raised beds, or in containers, the drainage problem largely solves itself. Plant in masses along a walkway or at the border front to appreciate the minty-licorice fragrance drifting on warm evenings. Deadheading promotes continued bloom. Classified as edible, the flowers and leaves can be used fresh in salads or dried as herbal tea. Zones 5 to 9.
