Emerald Gaiety Euonymus

The white-margined leaves catch winter light in a way few evergreen shrubs can match, holding the eye long after summer color has faded.

'Emerald Gaiety' is among the most reliably ornamental of the wintercreeper cultivars, growing slowly to five or six feet as a bushy rounded shrub, though it will climb readily if given a wall or trellis to work with. The small, white-edged leaves are the main event; in colder months they often develop a faint pink flush at the margins, adding an unexpected warmth to the winter garden.

Given average moisture and well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade, this shrub establishes without fuss and tolerates urban conditions and significant shade. Like all E. fortunei cultivars, it should be kept away from woodland margins to prevent escape by bird-spread seed. Watch for euonymus scale, which can be severe if left untreated.
