Box-Leaf Euonymus
Euonymus japonicus
A dense, glossy-leaved evergreen from the coastal woods of Japan and Korea, valued for its adaptability and its tolerance of salt wind, shade, and hard pruning.
Japanese euonymus is a substantial broadleaf evergreen, typically growing 10 to 15 feet tall and 5 to 8 feet wide as a dense oval form, though left unpruned it can reach 26 feet. Native to the coastal forests of Japan and Korea, it has a natural affinity for maritime conditions, tolerating salt spray that would damage most other evergreen shrubs. This makes it particularly useful in gardens near the sea.
It adapts to full sun or heavy shade, performs in most soil types including clay, and withstands heavy pruning, making it a dependable choice for hedges and foundation plantings. The insignificant spring flowers are followed by small fruits. Scale insects are its most serious pest, requiring prompt treatment when spotted; deer pressure and occasional powdery mildew round out the main maintenance concerns.
