Jewel Plant
Fittonia albivenis
The nerve plant does not perform — it simply exists, with those vivid veined leaves that make even a small pot of it feel like a botanical illustration come to life.
Fittonia albivenis grows as a creeping evergreen in the tropical rainforests of South America, spreading low beneath the canopy where humidity is high and direct sun rarely penetrates. As a houseplant it stays compact — rarely more than 8 inches tall and 18 inches across — which makes it ideal for small pots, hanging baskets, and terrariums. The leaves are its entire point: deep olive green, ovate, and marked with veins in white, pink, or red, with the intensity of a hand-colored specimen drawing. The genus name honors the botanist sisters Elizabeth and Sarah Mary Fitton, who published Conservations on Botany in 1817.
Care comes down to humidity and consistent moisture. The nerve plant wilts dramatically when it dries out but recovers quickly after a thorough drink, which is both a relief and a useful signal to water on schedule. Bright to medium indirect light works well, as does fluorescent lighting — it is one of the better plants for an office or a room without strong natural light. The shallow root system means a small pot suits it for a long time. Pinching stems encourages a bushier habit. Direct sun will scorch the leaves, and the same will happen if the air is too dry for too long.
