Goeppertia coccinea

From the humid rainforests of southern Mexico and Central America, this prayer plant relative patterns its medium to silvery-green leaves with dark feathered stripes that hold their graphic quality in the low light of a shaded interior.

Goeppertia coccinea is a tropical evergreen perennial that makes its home in the warm, humid understorey of Central American and southern Mexican rainforests, where dappled light and steady warmth are the baseline conditions. Indoors it grows to 18-24 inches tall in a mounding, rhizomatous clump, its elongated leaves displaying medium green to silvery-green surfaces marked with dark stripes arranged in a feather-like pattern. Despite its species name, which translates to scarlet or red, the flowers are small and rarely produced in cultivation — this is a foliage plant through and through.

The care regime follows the prayer plant template closely: partial shade, a well-draining indoor mix, even moisture from distilled or rainwater, and consistent humidity around 60%. Room temperature between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit suits it, with no tolerance for cold drafts or sudden drops. Wiping the leaves periodically with a clean cloth keeps the pores clear and preserves the leaf pattern's sharpness. Propagate by division in spring. Bathrooms and kitchens, where ambient humidity runs higher, tend to keep it happiest with the least intervention.
