Japanese Forest Grass
Hakonechloa macra 'Samurai'
'Samurai' brings cream and green variegation to shaded woodland corners, its graceful arching habit making a refined statement with very little effort.
Hakonechloa macra 'Samurai' is a cultivar that favors subtlety over spectacle. Where 'Aureola' draws the eye with gold, 'Samurai' works in cooler tones: creamy white stripes on green leaves, arching in loose, graceful clumps that move with the slightest air movement. It reads as elegant rather than showy, which makes it a reliable companion for hostas, ferns, and other shade garden stalwarts without competing for attention.
It grows best in moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade, and like all Hakonechloa it should be cut back before new growth begins in spring. As a container plant it performs particularly well, the cascading habit showing cleanly over the rim of a pot. Deer leave it alone, and it tolerates the urban conditions that defeat many ornamental grasses. In the right spot, it simply does what it promises, year after year.
