Invincibelle™ Hydrangea
Hydrangea arborescens Invincibelle™ Spirit II 'NCHA2'
Dark foliage, stiff stems, and rich pink mopheads that age to green — an improved Invincibelle that earns its place in any serious shrub border.
Invincibelle Spirit II is the refined follow-up to the original Invincibelle Spirit, correcting for weaker stems and improving flower substance while keeping the same reliable blooming habit. At 3 to 4 feet tall and spreading a bit wider at 3 to 6 feet, it is slightly broader in habit than some of its Incrediball-series siblings. The darker foliage is a genuine improvement: it creates contrast with the rich pink blooms that the original Spirit could not quite match, and the stiffer stems mean the flowers hold their heads up even after rain.
Flowers appear on new wood, opening from midsummer and continuing through frost, aging from deep pink to a soft chartreuse-green that provides its own quiet interest late in the season. That green phase makes the dried flowers worth keeping in arrangements well into fall. A minimum of four hours of direct sun is recommended for strong color and good stem strength; afternoon shade is valuable in hotter climates to prevent bleaching. Mulch the shallow roots to retain moisture and insulate through winter. Resistant to deer and black walnut toxicity, it is also a host plant for the Hydrangea sphinx moth larva and brings in bees, butterflies, and songbirds across its long bloom.
