Expressionistic™ Tutsans
Hypericum androsaemum 'Pollock'
The most visually energetic of the Expressionistic tutsans, 'Pollock' drapes its foliage in green and white variegation that reads as splattered paint before the summer flowers even open.
The name is apt: 'Pollock' is the most kinetic of the three Expressionistic tutsan cultivars bred at NC State, its foliage marked with green and white variegation that gives the plant a splattered, improvisational quality. Like its companions 'Matisse' and 'Picasso', it is a triploid, seedless form — developed by Richard Olsen and Clara Trueblood specifically to offer nursery growers a non-invasive alternative to a species with a complicated reputation in many parts of the world.
At 2 to 3 feet, 'Pollock' works well as a low hedge, on a slope, or in a naturalized woodland area where the variegated foliage can catch filtered light and hold interest across the season. Yellow flowers appear in summer, bright against the patterned leaves. Full sun produces heavier flowering, but it tolerates shade without losing its foliage effect. Well-drained, loamy, acidic soil is ideal; once established it handles drought. Mulch the roots heading into winter in zone 5, and cut back hard if dieback occurs — the roots will push fresh growth come spring.
