Magland Holly

Oakland holly distinguishes itself by the shape of its foliage, oak-like and spiny, and by red-orange berries that sing against bright green in the winter garden while feeding the songbirds working through the cold.

Marketed as Oakland, the hybrid cultivar 'Magland' is a broadleaf evergreen shrub of erect, pyramidal habit that tolerates a wider range of soil pH than many hollies, making it a reliable choice where slightly alkaline conditions might cause other Ilex selections to struggle with chlorosis. It grows to twelve to twenty feet tall, and light pruning in early spring keeps its form tidy without the heavy-handed shearing that would compromise the following season's berry display. The small flowers are technically perfect, carrying both male and female parts, which means 'Magland' can self-fertilize and even help pollinize nearby hollies.

The combination of oak-shaped, spiny bright green leaves and red-orange berries is the plant's visual signature, and the berry clusters hold well through winter, drawing in songbirds when other food sources have been exhausted. Plant it in full sun to partial shade with some protection from cold northern winds, and in the hotter parts of its range, a site with afternoon shade will keep the foliage looking its best. It performs equally well as a hedge, a screening plant along a property edge, or a bold specimen anchoring a formal foundation planting where its persistent winter color can be seen from a window.
