Dwarf Iris

Iris reticulata 'Harmony' is the kind of bulb that earns genuine affection: barely five inches tall, it opens royal blue flowers striped with white and yellow in the earliest weeks of spring, small enough to fit in a pocket, vivid enough to stop you in your tracks.

'Harmony' is a cultivar of Iris reticulata, the netted iris, and it makes the most of its modest five-inch stature with flowers that are vivid even against late-winter light. The blooms are two to three inches across, a clear royal blue with the outer falls marked by white and yellow striping that gives each flower a layered, jeweled quality. The foliage is strap-like and fans outward from the base, and the whole plant has a neat, contained habit that suits rock gardens, raised beds, and containers equally well. Grown in pots, it can be brought inside to force early flowering and serves as a florist plant of real quality.

Plant the reticulate-coated bulbs five inches deep to the base, spaced one inch apart at up to eighty per square foot for a dense display. During the growing season the bulbs want consistent moisture, but summer drought after the foliage dies back is well tolerated, which makes them practical in typical garden conditions. They are less susceptible to iris borer and the fungal troubles that affect taller iris species, and they hold their own near black walnut trees where many plants struggle. After bloom, offsets develop naturally and can be separated and replanted, building up the colony year by year.
