San Jose Chinese Juniper

Juniperus chinensis 'San Jose'

Foliage
San Jose Chinese Juniper

The 'San Jose' juniper spreads itself flat and wide like a green tide, a sage-toned mat that hugs the ground and asks almost nothing in return for a year-round display.

San Jose juniper is among the most obliging of the low-spreading Chinese junipers, growing in a prostrate, mat-like form with long trailing branches that reach outward and gently upward. At maturity it stretches 6 to 8 feet wide while staying just 1 to 1.5 feet tall, the soft needle-to-scale foliage holding a warm sage green through every season. It blankets ground efficiently, roots hold slopes against erosion, and the plant minds its own business in conditions that would trouble more delicate things.

It tolerates clay, rocky soil, a wide pH range, drought, salt, and air pollution without significant complaint. Full sun brings out the best in it, though partial shade is acceptable. Deer find it unappealing, which in the right garden is as valuable as any ornamental quality. Plant it where a permanent, low-maintenance surface is needed and trust it to fill its space evenly over time.
