Noah's Ark juniper

'Compressa' is the pencil-thin juniper, a dense silvery-blue column that grows just narrow enough to feel almost impossible, the most architecturally precise of a family known for sprawling.

Juniperus communis 'Compressa' is a dwarf, cone-shaped cultivar of the common juniper, a species with perhaps the widest natural range of any conifer in the world, from the Arctic Circle to North Carolina, across Europe and through Asia. Where the species runs the gamut from low-spreading shrub to 45-foot tree depending on conditions, 'Compressa' holds a narrow, upright line of just 2 to 6 feet tall and 1 to 1.5 feet wide. The silvery-blue foliage is dense and slightly prickly, the columnar form almost architectural in its precision.

Hardy from zone 2 through zone 9, it tolerates cold that would damage most garden shrubs and handles heat and humidity with comparable ease. It grows best in full sun with medium moisture, though the species is broadly adaptable. The berries, like those of the broader species, serve as the dominant flavoring of gin, a botanical detail that gives this modest little column an unexpectedly storied lineage. Deer resistance, reliable hardiness, and a striking silhouette make 'Compressa' a useful accent plant wherever a vertical note is wanted without the expense of height.
