Variegated creeping juniper
Juniperus conferta 'Variegata'
Variegated Shore Juniper carries its mix of green, yellow, and creamy-white needles low to the ground, adding a lightness to the border that solid-green junipers cannot provide. In winter the foliage deepens to purple-dark green, a seasonal counterpoint to that bright variegation.
Juniperus conferta 'Variegata' is a slow-growing dwarf that spreads broadly without building much height, reaching about 1 foot tall and up to 6 feet wide at maturity. The foliage is the main event: a lively mix of green and yellow to creamy-white variegated needles that give the plant a texture no single-color juniper can replicate. In winter that variegated brightness gives way to a deeper purple-dark green, and the female cones ripen in fall and persist through the colder months, adding structural interest when the rest of the garden has quieted down.
This is an adaptable cultivar with an easy-going constitution. It is drought-tolerant once established, indifferent to soil pH, tolerant of urban pollution, and low-maintenance enough to require only occasional pruning to manage spread. Full sun brings out the best variegation, though it accepts a range of conditions provided the soil drains freely and standing water is never an issue. As an accent in a rock garden, a draping element over a wall, or a front-of-border ground cover, 'Variegata' offers a quiet originality that earns it space in gardens where most junipers would look too uniformly austere.
