Calgary Carpet Juniper

Juniperus sabina 'Monna'

Calgary Carpet Juniper

At barely six to nine inches tall and up to ten feet wide, Calgary Carpet Juniper seems to have made a philosophical decision: go sideways, not up. The result is a tough, soft-foliaged evergreen that covers ground with an ease that few plants can match.

Introduced by Monrovia Nursery in 1978 and carrying a registered trademark to prove it, Calgary Carpet Juniper belongs to the Savin juniper group and brings all of that lineage's toughness to the landscape. The foliage is soft and genuinely green, without the blue-gray cast of many junipers, and the arching, weeping form of the branches gives the plant a relaxed, natural silhouette even in formal settings. It stays under nine inches tall in most gardens, which keeps sightlines clean and maintenance minimal.

It grows best in full sun with medium moisture and well-drained soil, and tolerates a wide range of soil types once established. Slopes and embankments are natural territory for it, where erosion control is as valuable as aesthetics, but it works equally well along walkways or as a repeating element in borders. Wet feet are its one real intolerance, so drainage matters more than fertility. Deer tend to pass it by, which in many gardens is recommendation enough.
