Table Top Juniper

Juniperus scopulorum 'Table Top'

Table Top Juniper

'Tabletop' does something unusual among upright junipers: it grows a few feet and then levels off, developing a flattened crown and outspreading branches that give it a sculptural, almost architectural presence in the landscape. At six feet tall and eight feet wide, it is as much a statement as it is a shrub.

'Tabletop' is a cultivar of Rocky Mountain Juniper that leans closer to shrub than tree, maturing at six feet tall with an eight-foot spread and a distinctively flattened top that sets it apart from the columnar forms its relatives favor. The foliage ranges from light green and gray-green to silver-blue, scale-like and fragrant, compressed along branches that spread outward rather than reaching skyward. This flattened, wide habit makes it a natural candidate for low hedging or as a repeated structural element across a large planting.

It does best in full sun with low to medium moisture and excellent drainage, and tolerates alkaline soils and drought with minimal intervention. Pruning requirements are light, limited to shaping in early spring if a tighter form is needed, and the plant is generally undemanding once established. Its range is strongest in the northern and western United States, where the drier conditions and cooler summer nights suit it well. Songbirds are drawn to its berry-like cones, which provides a seasonal footnote to an otherwise quietly utilitarian plant.
