Pfitzer Group

The Pfitzer group sprawls with purpose, its branches held at a steady 45-degree angle from the trunk and staying green through the coldest months. A hybrid of chinensis and sabina ancestry, it is fragrant when crushed and untroubled by city air.

Juniperus x pfitzeriana is a hybrid juniper with Juniperus chinensis and Juniperus sabina in its lineage, and the cross produces something more adaptable than either parent alone. The wide-spreading, compact habit makes it useful as a hedge, foundation planting, or rock garden anchor, while certain cultivars grow low enough to serve as a spreading groundcover. The branches extend outward at a consistent 45-degree angle, and they hold that posture through winter, when their persistent green foliage provides structure in the landscape at a time when deciduous plants have little to offer. Crush a handful of the scale-like leaves and the fragrance is sharp and resinous.

This juniper tolerates drought, erosion, dry or shallow rocky soil, clay, air pollution, and seaside conditions, covering most of the difficult scenarios a garden presents. It wants well-drained soil and full sun, and it will not tolerate standing water. Some pruning helps maintain the compact habit over time. Deer seldom bother it. Across zones 4 through 9, the Pfitzer group offers a reliable, structural evergreen for situations where something tough and spreading is needed, without requiring the ongoing attention that more ornamental shrubs demand.
