Lagenaria siceraria is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world, grown across Africa, Asia, and the Americas long before written records began. The genus name comes from the Greek lagenos, meaning flask or vase, and the fruits do take on that quality as they mature: interestingly shaped, hard-shelled, and entirely waterproof once dried. The large white flowers open at night and are best hand-pollinated to improve fruit set. Seeds, young leaves, flowers, and tender stems are all edible, making this one of those rare plants that is useful at almost every stage of its growth.

In the garden, bottle gourd needs sandy or loamy well-drained soil, full sun, and a long hot summer. Direct-seed outdoors after frost danger has passed and the soil temperature has reached seventy degrees. Plant in mounds spaced three feet apart if growing on supports or four to six feet apart if letting the vines trail on the ground. Consistent moisture is important, but the plants are notably tolerant of heat and humidity. The vines grow quickly and produce dense foliage that makes an effective seasonal screen. If the goal is decorative gourds, support structures keep the fruit off the ground and allow it to develop more uniformly. Harvest when the skin has hardened completely, then allow to dry thoroughly before finishing for use.
