Snow Princess Alyssum

Snow Princess alyssum is the heat-tolerant answer to the classic edging annual, tumbling from baskets and cascading over walls in a continuous froth of tiny white fragrant flowers from spring until frost.

A hybrid cross between two Lobularia species from the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean coast, Snow Princess was bred specifically to push past the main limitation of traditional sweet alyssum: its tendency to shut down in summer heat. This sterile cultivar puts energy that would otherwise go into seed production back into flowering, which is why it blooms so persistently and with such vigor from spring into fall.

The trailing habit makes it genuinely excellent in hanging baskets, where the stems can droop several feet downward in a cascade of white. It also works well cascading over retaining walls or spilling from the front of a mixed container. Average, consistently moist, well-drained soil in full sun keeps it performing. Daily watering in hot weather is not excessive for a plant growing in a container. Though winter hardy in zones 10 to 11, it is almost always grown as an annual in cooler regions, set out at the last frost date and pulled at season's end.
