Everblooming Honeysuckle

Goldflame's flowers open from deep pink buds to a warm gold-flushed interior, a color shift that plays out daily across a bloom season stretching from spring into early summer.

Goldflame honeysuckle is a three-way hybrid involving two European species, Lonicera caprifolium and L. etrusca, crossed with the North American L. sempervirens. The result is a semi-evergreen to deciduous twining vine reaching 10 to 13 feet, with blue-green foliage and flowers that open from distinctly pink-purple buds to reveal a creamy gold interior. The fragrance is subtle but present, and the display, though it rarely extends all the way to fall, is reliably generous in spring and early summer.

This hybrid prefers fertile, well-drained soil and good air circulation, as it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in stagnant conditions. It is intolerant of alkaline soils. Full sun produces the best bloom, though it tolerates some afternoon shade. Unlike many Lonicera, it rarely fruits, which keeps seed dispersal low and makes it a more responsible choice in gardens bordering natural areas. It climbs well on arbors and fences but is not dense enough for a complete screen. Zones 5 to 8.
