Flowering Crabapple

Royal Raindrops stands out in the crabapple world for its deep magenta flowers set against purple-tinted foliage — a striking combination that few street trees or specimens can rival in spring.

Royal Raindrops crabapple was bred from Malus transitoria and introduced for its exceptional disease resistance alongside unusual ornamental qualities. The foliage emerges with a distinct purple cast that persists through the growing season, providing a rich backdrop for the deep magenta-pink spring flowers. At maturity the tree reaches 20 feet tall by 16 feet wide, a size that works well in smaller urban gardens, along streets, or as a specimen anchor in a mixed border.

It is genuinely easy to grow — tolerant of air pollution, soil compaction, and a range of drainage conditions, as long as it receives full sun and consistent moisture while establishing. The small red crabapples ripen in autumn and persist into early winter, providing food for birds when little else is on offer. Prune in late winter if shaping is needed, avoiding spring cuts that invite fireblight. Where older crabapple varieties have disappointed with disease susceptibility, Royal Raindrops offers a durable and visually dramatic alternative.
