Tall Switch Grass

'Cloud Nine' earns its name twice over: first in summer, when its blue-green columns rise to 8 feet and the flower panicles float overhead in an airy haze, and again in fall, when the whole structure shifts to a deep, burnished gold.

Among the taller switchgrass cultivars, 'Cloud Nine' occupies a particular niche — it is large enough to serve as a seasonal screen or structural anchor in a large border, reaching 5 to 8 feet with an upright habit that holds through the season. The blue-green summer foliage deepens to dark gold in fall, a color that reads warmly against the muted tones of late October and November. The flower panicles emerge in late summer and remain attached into winter, which extends the plant's usefulness considerably into the colder months.

Like all Panicum virgatum selections, 'Cloud Nine' is highly resistant to deer browsing, tolerates a range of soil conditions, and thrives with minimal maintenance. Hardy from zones 4 to 9, it suits large naturalistic plantings, meadow gardens, or the back of a generous border. Cut it down in late winter before fresh growth begins, and it rewards that single annual intervention with another full season of presence.
