Parodia

Small enough for a windowsill but dramatic enough to stop you mid-room, Parodia cacti produce outsized flowers in vivid yellow at their crown — a reminder that restraint in stature and extravagance in bloom are not mutually exclusive.

The genus Parodia originates in the grasslands, rocky cliffs, and gravelly slopes of Colombia, Bolivia, southern Brazil, and northern Argentina, where the species have adapted to bright light, sharp drainage, and long dry spells. Named for the Paraguayan botanist Domingo Parodi, the genus encompasses 71 accepted species ranging from small globes to short cylinders, all ribbed and spine-set, with flowers appearing at the apex as if the plant were wearing a crown. The bloom color varies by species but yellow and gold are common, the prominent stigma often a contrasting shade for added drama.

As houseplants, Parodias are among the most rewarding cacti to grow. They stay compact, rarely demanding a pot larger than what you started with for years at a time. The key requirements are a cactus-appropriate potting mix, a sunny window, and a willingness to let the soil go completely dry between waterings. During winter, watering should stop almost entirely. Root rot from overwatering is the main threat; given proper drainage and restraint with the watering can, these plants are remarkably trouble-free.
