Jelly Plant
Peperomia clusiifolia
The deep green leaves edged in dark red or maroon make the Red Edged Peperomia a study in restrained drama — it earns its place not by flowering, but by simply existing with quiet distinction.
Originating in Jamaica, Peperomia clusiifolia belongs to the Piperaceae, the pepper family, and it carries the family's characteristic unhurried energy. It mounds to 6 inches to a foot tall, its stiff, elliptical, glossy leaves holding the kind of presence that comes from excellent structure rather than showiness. The dark red margins look painted on — precise and clean against the deep green centers.
As a houseplant it rarely flowers, which is fine: those greenish-white spikes are a footnote compared to the foliage. It prefers bright indirect light but tolerates low light without complaint, making it reliable in the kinds of corners where many plants falter. Water carefully, allow the soil to drain well between drinks, and avoid cold drafts. Slow-growing and compact, it won't outgrow its pot for a long time, which may be the most practical thing one can say about a houseplant.
