Ivy Leaf Peperomia

The heart-shaped leaves of Ivy Leaf Peperomia shimmer in metallic silver-green, the deep green veins running through them like the ribs of a leaf pressed in old silver foil.

Peperomia griseoargentea comes from southwest Brazil, where it grows in wet tropical conditions on the forest floor and occasionally on tree bark. The species name means grey-silver, and the leaves deliver on that promise entirely: metallic, rippled, and striking in indirect light. Its clumping habit and compact size — 6 to 8 inches tall, 5 to 7 inches wide — make it an ideal candidate for a small pot on a well-lit shelf or office desk.

The thick, semi-succulent leaves and stems store water, which means overwatering is the primary way to lose this plant. Bright indirect light is ideal; the silvery leaf surfaces can scorch in direct sun. Pot it in a porous, well-draining mix, water when the top inch of soil is dry, and resist the impulse to fuss over it. Low maintenance is not a euphemism here — it genuinely thrives on a degree of neglect that most plants would find insulting.
