Blushing Philodendron

The name says it all: erubescens, to blush, and the undersides of every leaf carry that coppery flush, as if the plant is perpetually embarrassed by its own beauty.

From the rainforests of Colombia, Blushing Philodendron climbs toward the canopy with purplish-red petioles and leaves that are deep glossy green above and flushed copper-red beneath. Indoors it stays manageable at 3 feet, though in its native habitat it reaches 60 feet into the tree tops, a reminder that every houseplant carries a wilder story.

Give it a moss pole and it will climb eagerly; set it in a wider pot without support and it sprawls, which asks more of the shelf it sits on. It prefers warmth, humidity, and the kind of bright indirect light found near but not in a south window. Overwatering is the most common mistake — the soil should be moist, not sodden, and drafts from air vents will brown the leaf edges before anything else does.
