Chinese Photinia
Photinia serrulata
A vigorous Chinese photinia grown as much for its dependable structure and bird-friendly fruit as for its frothy spring flowers — pragmatic, resilient, and larger than it first appears.
Photinia serrulata is essentially a synonym for Photinia serratifolia in modern usage, and the two share the same impressive profile: a broadly oval, multistemmed shrub or small tree reaching 20 to 30 feet with a moderate to rapid growth rate that quickly outgrows modest planting spots. The white spring flowers arrive in dense corymbs and, while their scent gives pause, the red fruit that follows draws songbirds reliably through autumn. New foliage emerges with a warm gold-yellow flush before settling into deep glossy green.
Among the photinias, this is the most disease-resistant, making it a sensible choice where Entomosporium leaf spot has plagued other cultivars. It transplants easily and can be trained to a single trunk for a more refined effect in larger gardens. Full sun to part shade suits it well; give it well-drained soil and enough space to express its naturally broad habit without constant shearing, which only invites problems.
