Himalayan Pieris

Himalayan pieris brings something the more familiar Pieris japonica cannot: new foliage that unfurls in vivid copper and gold tones before settling into green, doubling the seasonal interest of a genus already valued for its spring flowers.

Pieris formosana hails from the mountain forests of Taiwan and southwestern China, where it grows into a substantial shrub reaching 6 to 10 feet in cultivation. Its claim to distinction within the genus is the new growth: emerging leaves flush with warm gold and copper tones that gradually mature to green, creating a layered, two-toned effect during the growing season that no other Pieris quite matches. Cream-colored, urn-shaped flowers appear in spring, consistent with the genus but secondary here to the foliage performance.

Hardy in zones 7 and 8, it prefers the same conditions as its relatives: acidic, well-drained soil, cool temperatures, and protection from high heat and humidity. Pruning is possible but should follow flowering, since next season’s blooms develop on old wood. Given its relative rarity in North American gardens, it remains a plant for the curious grower willing to seek it out.
