Dwarf Scots Pine

Pinus sylvestris 'Watereri'

Dwarf Scots Pine

'Watereri' is the Scots pine for those who want the species' ornamental character — twisted blue-gray needles, orange-tinged bark, small cones — without decades of waiting for something to happen.

Pinus sylvestris 'Watereri' grows slowly toward 10 to 12 feet tall, upright in youth and broadening to a wide cone as it matures, with branch tips angled upward in a habit that feels slightly more formal than the rambling crown of the full species. The stiff, twisted needles are an attractive blue-gray, and the small cones and orange-tinged bark provide visual interest through every season of the year. Its measured growth rate makes it a longtime favorite for bonsai practice, though it is equally useful as a specimen tree in a smaller garden where scale matters.

This cultivar tolerates a wide range of soil conditions provided drainage is good, and it is hardy from zone 4 to 9 — unusually broad for a Scotch pine selection. Like all Pinus sylvestris cultivars, it performs best in full sun and does not appreciate the heat and humidity of the deep South despite its zone rating. The plant is not native but has naturalized in parts of the northeastern and north-central United States. Sphaeropsis tip blight, pine wilt nematode, sawflies, and scale are worth watching for, though the tree is generally reliable in appropriate climates.
