Pixie-Parasol

Podophyllum cymosum

Flower
Pixie-Parasol

A Blue Ridge native that rises from mountain seepages with outsized, parasol leaves and white blooms, then rewards patience with jewel-blue fruits on red stems.

Found along brook-banks and seepage slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Pixie-Parasol is one of the more quietly theatrical natives in North Carolina's mountain flora. Its large, rounded leaves command attention first, unfurling like small umbrellas over the damp ground, followed in May and June by a rounded head of white flowers that sits on top of the foliage rather than dangling beneath it.

What comes after the bloom is the real prize: blue fruits held on deep red stems, a color combination that feels almost too deliberate for a woodland edge. It demands reliably moist conditions, making it a natural fit for stream banks or the boggy margins of garden ponds. Slow to establish and spreading only gradually by rhizome, it rewards gardeners willing to give it time and a consistently wet home.
