Angled Solomon's Seal
Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum 'Variegatum'
No other shade plant brightens a dark corner quite like this one, its white-edged leaves catching every stray shaft of light and holding it through the season.
Variegated Solomon's Seal carries a long history across a wide geography, with wild origins spanning China, Japan, Korea, and much of Europe. The cultivar 'Variegatum' refines the species into something particularly elegant: bright green leaves edged in cream, maroon-tinged arching stems, and dangling white bell-shaped flowers that carry a gentle fragrance from April into June. At three to four feet tall, it makes a strong vertical statement in a shaded border and combines beautifully with hostas, astilbes, and bleeding hearts. Bees find the flowers early in the season when other shade plants are still dormant.
This plant is slow to establish but genuinely long-lived, asking only for moist, humus-rich soil and protection from the afternoon sun. In cool summer climates it performs magnificently; in hot regions, a north-facing bed or the shade of high-canopy trees is essential. Propagate by dividing the rhizomes in spring or fall, planting them horizontally a few inches below the surface and keeping them moist until new growth appears. Once a colony matures, it will reliably return each year with minimal attention.
