Snow Fountains
Prunus x subhirtella Snow Fountains® 'Snofozam'
Snow Fountains® is the rare ornamental cherry that works at small scale — a slow-growing weeping tree draped in pure white flowers, with golden fall color that extends its season well beyond spring.
Where most weeping cherries demand space to sprawl, Snow Fountains® — sold under the cultivar name 'Snofozam' — offers the same pendulous architecture in a package suited to courtyard gardens and tight residential lots. Growing 8 to 15 feet tall, it can be purchased as a top-grafted standard, a natural weeping form, or a ground cover that drapes elegantly over walls and slopes. In early spring, its cascading branches are smothered in pure white flowers that earn the name completely; the fallen petals are, as noted by those who grow it, attractive even on the ground beneath.
Bright green leaves follow the flowers, and by fall the foliage turns a warm golden orange — an underappreciated quality in a tree so often selected purely for spring. Butterflies are drawn to the blooms. Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained loam and prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape. It is more disease-resistant than many in the ornamental cherry group, with caterpillars and leaf miners being occasional nuisances rather than serious threats. Its year-round structure makes it one of the better small garden trees available for zones 5 through 8.
