Common Pear

The common pear arrives in spring as a froth of gold-stamened blossom before spending the long summer quietly building its harvest — a tree that earns its place in any garden willing to give it sun and room to breathe.
Native to a sweep of land from Europe to northern Iraq, the common pear has been cultivated for thousands of years, and it shows: few trees carry themselves with quite the same unhurried confidence. Growing 40 to 50 feet tall in its natural form, it is typically grafted onto dwarfing rootstock to keep it manageable, which also brings fruit production earlier and within reach. Well-drained soil and full sun are the main requirements; it will tolerate the occasional dry spell once established.
Fruit quality improves markedly when two or more compatible varieties are planted within pollinating distance of each other, so selecting a companion at planting time is worth the thought. The trees draw in bees and butterflies during their spring flowering, and songbirds follow the ripening fruit through autumn. Fireblight is the disease to watch, though many modern cultivars carry strong resistance to it.
