Canyon Live Oak

California's most widespread oak, a broadleaf evergreen with golden wooly acorn cups and the striking ability to grow as either a towering tree or a dense slope-covering shrub.

Canyon Live Oak ranges across western Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, and into Mexico, and in all those places it adapts its form to the conditions at hand. On canyon floors and moist slopes it becomes a substantial tree reaching 80 feet, with a broad trunk and spreading crown of thick, leathery, shiny dark green leaves. On exposed ridgetops it compresses into a dense multi-stemmed shrub no taller than 15 feet. The leaves themselves shift character between youth and maturity: young foliage carries spiny holly-like margins; mature leaves smooth out to entire edges. The golden, wooly acorn cups are the definitive identifier and the source of most of its common names.

This is a slow-growing tree, but the tradeoff is a lifespan approaching 300 years. Once established it tolerates drought well, and its root system grips steep rocky slopes effectively, making it a valuable plant for erosion control on difficult terrain. It supports Steller jays, woodpeckers, wild turkeys, squirrels, bears, and mule deer, and serves as a host plant for the Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. Acidic to neutral, well-drained soils in full sun bring out its best, and it exhibits useful salt spray tolerance for coastal California gardens.
