Quercus x comptoniae

A hybrid oak of low country origins, bridging the spreading habit of Overcut Oak with the persistence of Southern Live Oak in a single commanding shade tree.

Compton Oak carries in its genetics a record of floodplain survival. A natural hybrid between Quercus lyrata and Quercus virginiana, it inherits the overcut oak's tolerance for periodically saturated soils and the live oak's broad, architectural presence. Plant it in zones 5 through 9 where a large shade tree is needed and the ground holds moisture, or where soil quality is poor enough to deter less adaptable species.

The deciduous foliage emerges a clean, deep green and the tree's canopy broadens generously with age. It is not a plant for small gardens, but for parks, estates, and open lawns where scale can be matched. Small mammals are among its chief beneficiaries, drawn to the reliable acorn crop that this Fagaceae hybrid produces year after year.
