Rhaphiolepis x delacourii Snowcap® 'Corleyscourii'

Snowcap Indian Hawthorn distinguishes itself from the pack with white spring flowers and rich burgundy winter foliage, a compact dome of a shrub that handles drought, disease, and coastal salt without complaint.

Snowcap Indian Hawthorn is a cultivar of the hybrid Rhaphiolepis x delacourii, bred for a compact, dome-shaped mounding habit that stays 3 to 4 feet tall and suits smaller gardens or tightly controlled borders. Its spring display comes in the form of showy white flower clusters rather than the pink typically associated with the genus, a distinction that makes it useful for gardens built around cooler color palettes. As temperatures drop in fall and winter, the foliage transitions to an attractive deep burgundy, giving the plant a second season of interest that sets it apart from greener-leafed cultivars.

Hardy in zones 7 to 10, Snowcap is well suited to coastal plantings and does well massed as a low hedge or screen. Full sun to partial shade both work, though flower production is strongest in full sun. Once established, it is drought tolerant and requires minimal maintenance beyond shaping. Notably, this cultivar carries resistance to Entomosporium leaf spot, the fungal disease that disfigures many Indian hawthorns in humid climates. Deer browsing remains the chief vulnerability, as it is for the rest of this genus, so siting in areas with lower deer pressure or using protective measures is advisable.
