Azalea 'Coral Bells'

Coral pink flowers cover this Kurume hybrid in abundance from the very first season, making it one of the most reliably floriferous compact azaleas for the partially shaded garden.

Coral Bells is a dwarf Kurume azalea that delivers on its promise early and consistently. The coral pink blooms appear in mid to late spring in such abundance that even freshly planted specimens put on a full show, and the semi-evergreen foliage turns attractive shades of red in winter. Growing 2 to 6 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, it fits a range of settings from the front of a shrub border to a container on a shaded patio. Zones 7 and 8 are its sweet spot.

Partial shade and moist, well-drained, acidic soil are non-negotiable requirements. This cultivar is notably susceptible to Phytophthora root rot, so good drainage must be a priority from the start. Amend clay soils generously with organic matter and plant slightly high to improve drainage around the root zone. Remove spent flower clusters promptly after bloom and avoid overfeeding with high-nitrogen fertilizers. The slow growth rate works in its favor in maintained plantings, holding the compact shape for years with minimal intervention.
