Hansa rose
Rosa 'Hansa'
Introduced in 1905 and still unsurpassed for cold-hardiness, Hansa is a suckering rugosa shrub with intensely fragrant purple-pink double blooms from spring through frost and bold orange-red hips that follow.
Hansa was introduced more than a century ago and remains one of the most reliable shrub roses for northern gardens. The large, very double blooms are a saturated purple-pink with a fragrance that is genuinely powerful at close range. Flowering begins in spring and continues through to frost, punctuated by waves of large orange-red hips that develop wherever flowers are not removed. The hips are ornamental through winter and provide food for birds.
Full sun and rich, well-drained soil produce the best performance, but Hansa tolerates drier and poorer soils with reasonable grace. Salt tolerance makes it a practical choice for coastal plantings and roadside situations. Allow the plant to grow to its natural 4 to 5 feet rather than cutting it back hard, as Hansa does not respond well to heavy pruning. Good air circulation reduces the risk of black spot and powdery mildew in humid climates, though the plant is generally disease resistant. In zone 3 through 8, this is one of the most bulletproof choices available.
