Hermosa rose

Rosa 'Hermosa'

Hermosa rose

Introduced in 1840 and still in gardens nearly two centuries later, Hermosa is a compact china rose with soft lavender-pink double flowers produced from summer through fall on a tidy spreading shrub.

Hermosa has a quiet, lasting appeal that explains why a rose introduced in 1840 still finds its way into gardens. The soft lavender-pink double blooms are produced singly and in small clusters from summer through fall, with a reliable repeat that keeps the plant in flower for months. The foliage is a subtle blue-green-gray that reads as understated alongside the blush-toned flowers.

At 2 to 3 feet tall with a spreading habit, Hermosa fits naturally at the front or middle of a mixed border, in cottage garden groupings of three or more, or along a path where the soft color can be seen up close. It grows in zones 6 through 9, tolerates deer, and attracts bees reliably. Like all china roses, it blooms on new wood and benefits from a light tidy in late winter rather than a severe cutback.
