Nympenburg

A hybrid musk shrub rose bred in 1954 with generous salmon-pink blooms that arrive in spring and continue in flushes all season on upright, well-furnished canes reaching 6-8 feet.

Reimer Kordes introduced Nympenburg in 1954, crossing Sangerhausen with Sunmist to produce a hybrid musk that combines the bushy vigor of the shrub rose with repeat-flowering reliability. The large, double salmon-pink flowers are fragrant and appear first in spring, then return in successive flushes through the growing season. The glossy green foliage is clean and attractive on the upright, densely branched canes. At 6-8 feet tall and 4 feet wide, this is a rose that works as a substantial border specimen or can be trained upward on a trellis to even greater effect.

Fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun gives Nympenburg the foundation it needs. Pruning in late winter to early spring, removing any dead or diseased canes and cutting the remainder back by about a third, keeps the plant shapely and productive. Avoiding overhead watering and overcrowding reduces the risk of black spot, powdery mildew, and rust. Hardy in zones 6-10. This rose rewards gardeners who give it a little structural support and room to demonstrate its arching elegance.
