Prosperity

Rev. Pemberton's 1919 hybrid musk blooms in creamy white flushed with soft pink, returning in flushes all season on a shrub tolerant of shade and lean conditions.

Prosperity was bred by Rev. Joseph Hardwick Pemberton in 1919 from Marie-Jeanne and Perle des Jardins. The semi-double flowers are white with a warm pink undertone, 3 to 4 inches wide, carried in large clusters and gently fragrant. Flowering runs in flushes from spring through fall, and the glossy dark green foliage on prickled canes provides a solid backdrop across the whole season. The Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit reflects what generations of gardeners already know about this cultivar's reliability.

Prosperity stretches 4 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, and it accepts light shade more readily than most roses. Tolerating poorer soils is another advantage inherited from the hybrid musk background. Feed weekly with a liquid fertilizer through the growing season and keep moisture consistent without letting roots sit in standing water. Prune back dead and crossed canes in late winter, but otherwise let this shrub find its own generous shape.
