Heart 'n' Soul rose

White petals edged in ruffled red make Heart ’n’ Soul a floriferous border shrub with a graphic, almost painterly quality that stands out in a season full of roses.

Heart ’n’ Soul was bred by Pierre Orard of France and introduced to the American market in 2001 by Weeks Roses. Its flowers are 2-3 inches across with 18 to 22 petals, white at the center and ruffled to red at the edges, the two-toned pattern repeating across the whole shrub in flushes throughout the season. Fragrance is mild to absent, putting the emphasis squarely on the visual. The shrub grows 4 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide in an upright, spreading habit.

Plant in full sun in amended, well-drained, moist garden soil. Prune in late winter to early spring to remove dead, crossed, or diseased wood and cut canes back by a third or more as needed. Deadheading spent blooms encourages the next flush. The foliage is glossy dark green on prickled stems. Watch for powdery mildew, rust, and black spot, particularly in humid conditions with poor air circulation. Hardy in zones 6 through 10.
