Absolutely Fabulous Rose
Rosa Julia Child™ 'WEKvossutono'
Named for the chef who loved cooking with butter, the Julia Child Rose matches its namesake in richness: fully double buttery-yellow blooms with a distinctive licorice-clove scent and outstanding disease resistance.
Tom Carruth bred this floribunda in 2004 with the name chosen personally by Julia Child herself, and it won the All-America Rose Selection in 2006 along with subsequent awards in multiple countries. The compact rounded shrub grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, making it manageable in containers, along walkways, or at the front of the border, and the 26 to 40 ruffled petals on each buttery-yellow bloom open continuously from late spring into fall. The licorice-clove scent is distinctive and genuine, not a faint background note but a real fragrance worth positioning where it can be appreciated.
Glossy green foliage provides a clean foil for the flowers, and disease resistance is reliably good. Plant in rich, fertile, well-drained soil with full sun, apply a balanced fertilizer in late winter and again in early summer, and deadhead spent blooms to keep new flowers coming. Prune in late winter to remove old and dead canes and shape the plant. It also attracts butterflies, adding another layer of activity to any pollinator or cottage planting.
