Linda Campbell

Named by miniature rose legend Ralph Moore for his collaborator, Linda Campbell is a tough hybrid rugosa that blankets wide, arching canes with brilliant red semi-double clusters through the summer.

Linda Campbell came from Ralph Moore crossing Anytime with Rugosa Magnifica, and it carries the rugosa heritage openly: wrinkled semi-glossy leaves, good black spot resistance, fewer thorns than most of its relatives, and a reliable tolerance for salt spray that makes it useful in coastal gardens. The 3-inch semi-double flowers are a vivid, true red, appearing in clusters throughout summer and attracting butterflies. Hardy down to zone 3, it handles cold that would finish off most ornamental roses.

The plant has a wide, spreading habit, reaching 4 to 6 feet tall but spreading to 6 to 8 feet across, so give it space. Slightly acidic, well-drained, fertile soil in full sun brings out the best performance. Remove spent blooms consistently to encourage repeat flowering rather than hip production. Prune as needed in late winter. Powdery mildew can be an occasional issue, but the overall robustness of this variety makes it a practical choice for borders, informal hedges, and difficult sites where more refined roses would struggle.
