Rosa Palmgarten Frankfurt™ 'KORsilan'

A Kordes hybrid bred in 1988 that clusters deep pink 2-inch blooms in repeated flushes throughout the season, its glossy foliage and compact form making it a tidy garden workhorse.

Palmgarten Frankfurt was hybridized by W. Kordes and Sons in Germany in 1988, drawing on a lineage that includes The Fairy, Temple Bells, Bubble Bath, and Lilli Marleen. The result is a reliable, rounded shrub growing 3 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, clothed in glossy green leaves and armed with prickled stems. The flowers are clustered, deep pink, 2 inches across, and appear in generous flushes that return through the season as spent blooms are removed. Butterflies are drawn to the open clusters.

Full sun and fertile, well-drained soil suit it best, with mulching around the base to hold moisture through drier stretches. Prune in early spring, removing dead, diseased, and crossed canes and reducing the overall form by up to a third. Overhead watering is worth avoiding to keep fungal diseases at bay. Disease resistance is considered quite good for this cultivar, though black spot, powdery mildew, and rust remain worth watching. Hardy through zones 5 to 9, it works equally well as a hedge component, foundation planting, or grouped specimen.
